Founded in 2008, in Kelowna, BC, Canada. Pela is a privately held independent company that began its journey as the world’s first compostable phone case creator.
The company was started after Jeremy Lang (founder) saw when his son Cole dug up some plastic on the beach in Hawaii and he started wondering about the impact of plastics on our planet.
An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption. In ten years, the United States will waste the equivalent of 66 tons of food per second across the globe. Reported by Rubicon. You know what? That food is perfect for compost that can be used to grow your own veggies, indoor plants and help with your outdoor garden.
In just 3 days after launching a crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo, Lomi generated more than $2.7M (€2.2M), in the next 11 days + $6.3M (€5.3M). One Lomi early bird special costs $329 (€276), later it will be $499 (€420) once the campaign ends.
You can throw in vegetables, fruits, animal products, foods, yard waste, and bioplastics such as compostable cutlery, compostable coffee cups, compostable packaging, single-use compostable plates. Lomi will “accept” any item that is marked as biodegradable or compostable, including Pela compostable phone and earphone cases.
It takes about 10+ hours for your compostables to be done. There is also an express mode that can reduce this time to 4+ hours, but it will reduce the volume by 80%. It does it by using heat, abrasion, and oxygen. Lomi does 3 things – it breaks down waste, creates compost, and decomposes plastic. Lomi begins by compacting the contents. Then, the sensors intelligently break down the food scraps without losing any vital microorganisms and lead to mass and volume reduction while continuous airflow and our heavy-duty grinder turn the compost.
Other similar products dehydrate your food and do not create compost that can be used for growing vegetables, flowers, and more. Lomi is a new technology and is patent pending.
It has a single button that is user-friendly and intuitive, there is not much you can or need to do anyway. Just fill it up (up to 3L – 3/4 recommended) and click start. With a dual carbon filtration system that absorbs odors and purifies the air, you will not really smell anything, depending on what is placed inside. The filters need to be changed at least every 3-6 months. The filters are not yet available in the shop, so we will have to wait and see how much it costs to maintain Lomi yearly. Once you are done, the bucket that is placed inside the compost chamber can be placed inside a dishwasher or washed with water and dish soap.
Sounds good, but how are the Lomi produced? Is it carbon neutral as well? Woo!
“Lomi is produced in our manufacturing plant in China which is ALWAYS Carbon Neutral! We pride ourselves on being a B Corp, Carbon Neutral, and waste-free! When it comes to using your Lomi, it really will be up to you but it has a few things built in to make it as efficient as possible.” Source. It is made of recyclable plastic and the interior parts are metal.
Lomi will ship to the USA and Canada starting in December 2021 and the UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong starting September 2022.
With all that said, it not only does its function well but it also looks great! Check it out:

Compostable AirPod and Phone Cases
1.5 billion phone cases are thrown out each year and they take up to 1000 years to break down. It then turns into micro-plastics that end up in the ocean. That is why Pela cases are made from plants or microorganisms. Once you are done using the case, you can send it back to them and they will be recycled into new cases. Or you can place them inside the Lomi.
Cases are tested to be free of lead, BPA, phthalates, and cadmium. You can see community photos here: Pela community.
Here is how they are made:
We only have about 10 years to go carbon neutral before it is too late and such companies as Pela are crucial for our planet and also for ourselves. There is massive growth potential in Greentech market as more people are becoming eco-friendly. There is also a similar, smaller company that has a creative new way to make sure no shampoo or shower gel bottles end up in the landfills, oceans, and rivers.
