Looking Glass Factory was founded in 2014, in USA Greenpoint, Brooklyn. There are also additional operations in Hong Kong, assuming that is where the manufacturing plant is based.
The founders are Shawn Frayne (CEO) and Alex Hornstein (CTO). They believe that this is the future of digital experience and maybe rightly so (not there just yet). Compared to VR, the Looking Glass Factory is taking a totally different approach (basing this on what is written on their about page). Instead of wearing a headset for hours on end (on a 2D screen), you can just enjoy a view together with your friends. Who knows, maybe someone will come along and use a 3D holographic display inside a VR headset and make it even more real? Could be.
Or you could just have a cool projector, like this one.
In 2018 Looking Glass Factory launched their first desktop holographic design kit. Here is how it looked like:
– Video also features their very first product that was launched earlier than that, looks like it is a prototype.
The issue here is that the camera angle in the video is only moved by a few degrees. Without a doubt, it is something unique and looks like real 3D, but it seems like the viewing angle was a bit limited.
The Looking Glass 8K Immersive Display
Recently though in 2020, Looking Glass Factory announced a new product – 8K 32 inch handset free holographic display.
This one can be used for 3D story telling, medical visualisation, experimental marketing, scientific visualisation and more. (not for movies, yet ☹️). Here is how it looks like:
It is difficult to yet know if this is actually better than what is already used in science, 3D modeling software has been out there for a long time already and can be used with any screen that is out there. The image and video modeling can be done by using Unity or Unreal Engine. The price is not specified on the website and you would need to contact the company to get a quote. But I have to do some research, so here is what I found. Shawn Frayne said that the screen will cost more than $6000 and Reddit Community is saying that the price could even reach $50 000 – $250 000 (this is just speculation). Worth mentioning that this product is strongly targeted to the medical field and we know, that prices there are hefty.

Looking Glass Portrait
This is a more consumer-based product, perfect for a cool desktop or wall painting alternative. With a successful Indiegogo campaign backed by 8,352 people reaching $2,637,543 (€2,062,011), it has made a very successful launch. It can now be pre-ordered directly from Looking Glass Factory website. Will be ready to be shipped in August 2021.
Looks like the company is trying to reach as many customers as possible, targeting individuals, companies, government organisations and more. I have high hopes for this product and would love to get my hands on it, if I do – a YouTube review video will be made and this article will be updated.
What Do You Think? Is This Something You Would Consider Purchasing?
This could be a great addition to startup conference tables, it will turn peoples head when they walk by. Even if the focus is on the hologram technology itself, this is a creative way to show off your own startup.
